7 Dehumidifier Mistakes That Waste Time and Electricity

A dehumidifier can be working correctly and still disappoint you.

Perhaps you expected a full tank overnight. Perhaps your washing still feels damp. Before you replace the machine, check whether its size, setting and surroundings match the task.

These seven checks give you somewhere useful to start.

1. Treating “20L” as a household promise

The number on the box is a capacity rating at specified test conditions. It is not a guaranteed amount collected in your room each day.

Meaco publishes extraction tables for its models, showing how performance changes with temperature and humidity. Use the row closest to your room conditions when comparing products. See an Arete Two extraction table.

2. Choosing without measuring the room temperature

A chilly utility room can change the buying decision. Meaco’s guidance favours desiccant models for spaces below around 10°C, with model-specific comparisons needed in the middle range. Read its compressor and desiccant guide.

Take a temperature reading where the appliance will sit. If you bought for a warm bedroom and later moved it into a cold garage, reassess its suitability before assuming it is faulty.

3. Blocking the airflow

The appliance needs to draw in room air and send it back out. Curtains, laundry and furniture can obstruct that process.

Follow your model’s clearance instructions rather than applying one spacing rule to every machine. Some Meaco models are designed for particular placement close to a wall; that does not make covering their inlet acceptable. The manufacturer’s manual should settle the positioning question. Find Meaco instruction manuals.

4. Forgetting a full tank or maintenance

Check the display before changing the settings. A full-tank stop is doing its job. A tank that is not correctly seated can also interrupt operation.

Keep the dust filter maintained as instructed, and replace other filters when the manufacturer recommends it. If you use continuous drainage, check the required hose size, slope and outlet arrangement. A drain hose is not automatically a pump.

5. Using the water tank as the only scorecard

Once humidity falls, the machine may collect less water. That can be a sign of progress. Check the room reading and your original problem: less window moisture, for example, or washing drying more consistently.

A separate hygrometer can provide a useful second reading, although inexpensive sensors will not necessarily match exactly. Keep it away from the machine’s immediate airflow.

6. Setting an unnecessarily low target

The lowest setting can mean more work and more electricity without giving you a useful result. Start with the manufacturer’s recommended setting, then assess the room rather than aiming for the driest air possible.

For laundry, use the dedicated mode if provided and keep clothes spaced apart. Check thicker garments separately. A timer finishing is not proof that every item is dry.

7. Expecting moisture removal to repair the building

A dehumidifier manages moisture in the air. It cannot repair a plumbing leak or water entering through the roof. Persistent damp needs its cause addressed. Energy Saving Trust explains why fixing the source matters.

Keep the home’s ventilation working, too. Moisture removal is not a substitute for exchanging stale air with fresh air.

When an upgrade makes sense

If you have checked the setup and your machine still cannot manage the room at suitable settings, compare a better-matched capacity or technology. A smaller heated flat and a busy household drying several loads of washing may need different choices.

If capacity seems to be the problem, compare Arete Two sizes. For washing, check the laundry setup.
